Facilities

Melting/Casting:

  • Electric resistance and induction melting furnaces suitable for aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys (maximum temperature of ~1100°C)
  • Heat treatment furnaces with rough atmosphere control
  • Capabilities for sand, investment and permanent mold casting
  • Various steel molds to produce samples for fluidity, hot tearing and mechanical properties

Sample Preparation and Characterization:

  • Keyence digital microscope
  • Microhardness tester with motorized stage
  • Struers grinder/polisher
  • Struers low speed saw
  • Struers abrasive wheel
  • Struers hot mounting press
  • Instron tensile tester
  • Zwick-Roll impact tester

Additional facilities within the University of Guelph:

  • X-ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Field emission and tungsten filament scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive electron spectroscopy (SEM)
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)

Other Facilities:

  • FDM and SLA 3D printers used for prototyping and investment casting
  • Access to machine shop
